Support Our Families, a Utah nonprofit corporation, was founded by members of the Saunders Family of Arlington, Virginia. The Support Our Families image was conceived in the spring of 2005 as a result of the family mindset of Paul and Steve from working with the fami.ly domain name. They were also inspired by the family proclamation and support our troops car magnet.
The acquisition of the fami.ly domain name was the result of a conversation between Paul and Steve in a BYU dorm room in the fall of 1998. They wanted a family domain name and since saunders.com was taken the conversation turned to how wonderful it would be to have the domain saunders.fam. A couple of days later Steve had the inspiration that an ly country code top-level domain may exist that could legitimize their .fam idea by making possible .fam.ly which he knew would work just like a .com. Soon he found that not only was .ly Libya's country-code, a company in the UK had recently began offering registrations in the .ly namespace. After a wire transfer to England they were able to secure the fam.ly and fami.ly domain names.
Paul and Steve brought in their brother Brent and committed to a three-way partnership to leverage the fam.ly domain name. They knew that Brent's mind was just as good as each of their own having grown up with him over the years. Brent was severely handicapped with cerebral palsy and was not a likely candidate for college, work or marriage - something that had weighed heavily on him as he got older. He couldn't speak or functionally control much more than the movement of his head but he could communicate with his family. Brent passed away on August 11th, 1999 at the age of 22 just over a month before his birthday. He was an inspiration to those around him, especially the members of his family.
Support Our Families is a resource for promoting family values. It was developed by members of an ordinary American family to help others find the same fulfillment they have found through investing time in each other as a family.
